Camille Rose Garcia

Camille Rose Garcia was born in 1970 in Los
Angeles, California and grew up in the generic
suburbs of Orange County, visiting Disneyland
and going to punk shows with the other
dissenchanted youth of that era. Her paintings
of creepy cartoon children living in wasteland
fairy tales are critical commentaries on the
failures of capitalist utopias. Creative influences
include Phillip K. Dick, William Burroughs,
Henry Darger,Walt Disney, as welll as politically
aware bands like The Clash and Dead Kennedys.
Her recent solo show, Ultraviolenceland, explored
ideas of violence and empire. Her work has
appeared in Flaunt Magazine, Rolling Stone,
Juxtapoz, and Paper Magazine, among others.
She currently lives in Los Angeles.

"Cavern Swan Escape" 2006

Subterranean Death Clash, shown in 2006 at the
Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. Using
narrative and fairytale structures, Camille Rose
Garcia's latest work, Subterranean Death Clash,
explores a futuristic scenario in which an
overpopulated, overdeveloped world is forced
to move underground. The Royal Disorder, led
by General Disorder and his army of poison
bottles and castles, slash and burn their way
through many different underworlds until they
dig their way into the final cavern, the Land
of the Dead. There they battle cave swans and
death armies in a final Subterranean Death Clash.

Cold Cave & Small Black

This band is from Philadelphia, New York and are amazing!
A dark wave of synthesizer confection with more than enough static and noise cycling with a beat that will make you move to it without realizing.
Songs are danceable, dark and instantly infectious.

Small Black
Long Island duo of Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner.
Low-fi and melodic. Sweet and bitter.

Kale and Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes

Kale and Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes Recipe

*3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
sea salt (or keep the potatoes unpeeled)
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
*4 cloves garlic, minced
*1 bunch kale, large stems stripped and discarded, leaves chopped
1/2+ cup warm milk or cream

freshly ground black pepper
*5 scallions, white and tender green parts, chopped
*1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan, for garnish (opt)
fried shallots, for garnish (optional)

Put the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil and continue boiling for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.

Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, chopped kale, a big pinch of salt, and saute just until tender - about a minute. Set aside.

Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or fork. Slowly stir in the milk a few big splashes at a time. You are after a thick, creamy texture, so if your potatoes are on the dry side keep adding milk until the texture is right. Season with salt and pepper.

Dump the kale on top of the potatoes and give a quick stir. Transfer to a serving bowl, make a well in the center of the potatoes and pour the remaining olive oil. Sprinkle with the scallions, Parmesan cheese, and shallots. Yummy!

Serves 6.

Another gem of a band: Dead Man's Bones

Pictured: Zach Shields, Silverlake Conservatory Children's Choir, Ryan Gosling

Collaboration between actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields. You might be thinking "oh no, not another Hollywood gone musician", but actually, this is pretty damn amazing!

They had a show here on October 24th at the Venue that I regrettably missed...

A great band = YACHT

Homemade Gifts for the Holidays that don't suck!

Mulled Spice and a bottle of red wine

Here's what you need:

christmas mulled wine recipe spicesMulled wine spices:
  • 3-4" cinnamon stick (7-10cm)
  • 30 cloves
  • 20 allspice berries
  • 3 cardamom pods
  • 1tsp orange peel or mixed peel (from baking section of supermarket)

Extra materials to make spice sachet:

  • 6" (15cm) square of cheese-cloth, muslin or other plain cotton fabric. Backup option: improvise with a coffee filter or a teabag (empty out the tea).
  • Cotton thread to bind the sachet shut
  • Colourful ribbon (just for looks - don't cook it!)
Making up the sachet is easy - just wrap all the spices up in the cloth, seal by tying with cotton thread, and tie a ribbon around to pretty it up :-) You'll need to break the cinnamon stick into pieces to make it fit. By the way, make sure you tell the recipient to remove the ribbon before cooking!

Method of preparation

Add spices, 3 Tbsp of sugar, and 750mL (one bottle) of red wine to a saucepan. If using a sachet, remove ribbon first! Sometimes I slice an orange into the saucepan too. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15min. Ladle into mugs and serve hot. Garnish with a slice of orange for a nice touch. If you like, you can also add a wee bit of brandy to give it a bit of kick.
What sort of red wine to use? Pick something inexpensive but drinkable. Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfadel, Merlot, or a Spanish red all work well. There's no point using a really expensive red wine, because the taste will be so altered by the spices. But don't use a really cheap and rough red either.

The Dinner Pot

If you’re known for something like a sauce, then prepare jars of it and pair them with the necessary dry ingredients and recipe cards. If you only have to give one or two of these, you can also buy cheap pasta pots at a local discount store. Arrange everything in the pots, then wrap them up with a nice bow.

Personalized Recipe Book

If he or she is a vegetarian or has a penchant for curry, loves anything with tomatoes in or is a sucker for chocolate, make use of the fact by making a personalized recipe book. Start collecting appropriate recipes from books or magazines and purchase a small, inexpensive book to write them in. Copy them out in your neatest handwriting or use calligraphy if you are talented. If you have artistic flair, you can also include illustrations! What a delight this would be to the avid cook or food lover.

Teacup Candles

Antique teacups that have lost their saucers still make sweet gifts when fitted with candles.

Ten Thousand Villages
If you do wish to shop for a gift, perhaps an alternative to department stores is Ten Thousand Villages which provides vital, fair income to Third World artisans by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. This alternative emphasizes the fair distribution of wealth while still in a consumerism context.

At Ten Thousand Villages, we work with over 130 artisan groups in more than 38 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring you fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more. As one of the world's oldest and largest fair trade organizations, we build long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life.

Cookies in a jar
Not the cookies themselves, but all the dry ingredients. Layer them in a Mason jar for an attractive presentation. Decorate the jar with fabric and ribbon, attaching the recipe with a bit of string (bonus points if you reuse the front half of old Christmas cards for this). These make great teacher gifts, or can be combined with other items in a gift basket. You’ll find plenty of variations at All Recipes.
