Christmas Gift Basket Wrapping ~ Professional style!

Why go for store bought pre-made Christmas Gift Baskets when you can make your own and customize it to who you plan to give it to!
All you will need is:
  • Basket
  • Tissue Paper
  • Cellophane
  • Ribbon (wired and curly ribbon)
  • Wire
  • Pine Cones
  • Tape

1. Center your basket on the cellophane.
2. Add your goodies
3. Start your ribbon bow. Make a loop, twist it in the middle, make your next loop, repeat. Continue about 3 or 4 times (depending on the size of your bow) and the loop gets bigger every time.
4. Keep the center pinched with your thumb and use the curly ribbon to secure.

5. Next the pine cones.  Cut some wire (medium gauge) and start mid-way of the wire and wrap it around near the base of the pine cone until both ends of the wire do a full circle, then pull up and meet at the bottom center of the cone and twist to secure.
6. Use the wire ends to affix to the bow's center. Make sure you twist the wire at the back of the bow in a way that will not poke and hurt anyone.
7. Now you're ready to finish the basket!

8. Use the curly ribbon to secure the gathered cellophane at the top.
9. Puff up the bow and you're done!

Tips to help speed up and irradicate that cold!!!

Ugh! The feeling of being sick is no f u n at all. But hey, it's inevitable unless you have no physical interractions with any other human beings. So now you're feeling the chills, have a runny nose and your throat feels like it's on fire. What do you do? Help yourself out with these home remedies that will surely either speed up the process so you can get back on your feet quicker or make the cold think twice that it should even try to invade your immune system.

Tip # 1
WILD OREGANO OIL

This stuff is POTENT. No, not the herb you find in your kitchen for cooking. It is important not to confuse Oil of Oregano with common oregano that is used as a spice for cooking. Common oregano is typically Origanum Marjoram, while Oil of Oregano is derived from Origanum Vulgare.

What are the Benefits of Oil of Oregano?

The ancient Greeks were one of the first people to recognize oregano oil for its health benefits and medicinal qualities. It is known to be a potent antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal,  and anti-parasitic oil that can reduce pain and inflammation and effectively fight off infections.

Some of the specific benefits of Oil of Oregano are:
  • Destroying organisms that contribute to skin infections and digestive problems.
  • Strengthening the immune system.
  • Increasing joint and muscle flexibility.
  • Improving respiratory health.
A few drops in a shot glass mixed with juice in the morning is all you need. Or for instant to the blood stream method, put a couple of drops under the tounge.

Tip #2
GINGER, GARLIC, LEMON & HONEY TEA

This home made tea is a life savor. Don't be turned off because of the garlic. There's a good reason it's in there and actually, you don't notice it in the flavor at all. The garlic aroma is infused with the ginger and lemon and makes quite a nice relaxer if inhaled (steam from the tea pot). You can add a dash of cayenne pepper for a kick to the fire in your throat as well!

So what you'll need is:
  • one or two cloves of garlic whole or mashed
  • 1" to 2" chunk of ginger with the skin removed. sliced
  • 1/4 slice of lemon (skin and all)
  • tablespoon of honey
  • dash or two of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • boiled hot water
Steep for 10 minutes. If you don't want to make an entire pot, you can always use a tea ball. The honey will coat and douse the fire in your throat. And my son seems to really like the tea!

Tip #3
SALT WATER GARGLE

This is an old one from my grandma. If you have a sore throat or the beginning of one, do this as a preventative measure to help stop infection in the throat right away. It's a simple as boiled hot water and sea salt (saltier the better). Let the salt melt in the water and let cool enough so that you don't burn your throat. Gargle and spit (no swallowing!) over and over again.

Tip #4
STAY IN YOUR PJS AND GET PLENTY OF REST

Angeles, California and grew up in the generic

and going to punk shows with the other
dissenchanted youth of that era. Her paintings
of creepy cartoon children living in wasteland
fairy tales are critical commentaries on the
failures of capitalist utopias. Creative influences
include Phillip K. Dick, William Burroughs,
Henry Darger,Walt Disney, as welll as politically
aware bands like The Clash and Dead Kennedys.
Her recent solo show, Ultraviolenceland, explored
ideas of violence and empire. Her work has

"Cavern Swan Escape" 2006

Subterranean Death Clash, shown in 2006 at the
Jonathan Levine Gallery in New York. Using
narrative and fairytale structures, Camille Rose
Garcia's latest work, Subterranean Death Clash,
explores a futuristic scenario in which an
overpopulated, overdeveloped world is forced
to move underground. The Royal Disorder, led
by General Disorder and his army of poison
bottles and castles, slash and burn their way
through many different underworlds until they
dig their way into the final cavern, the Land
of the Dead. There they battle cave swans and
death armies in a final Subterranean Death Clash.

Kale and Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes

Kale and Olive Oil Mashed Potatoes Recipe

*3 pounds potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks
sea salt (or keep the potatoes unpeeled)
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
*4 cloves garlic, minced
*1 bunch kale, large stems stripped and discarded, leaves chopped
1/2+ cup warm milk or cream

freshly ground black pepper
*5 scallions, white and tender green parts, chopped
*1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan, for garnish (opt)
fried shallots, for garnish (optional)

Put the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Add a pinch of salt. Bring the water to a boil and continue boiling for 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.

Heat two tablespoons of olive oil in a large pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, chopped kale, a big pinch of salt, and saute just until tender - about a minute. Set aside.

Mash the potatoes with a potato masher or fork. Slowly stir in the milk a few big splashes at a time. You are after a thick, creamy texture, so if your potatoes are on the dry side keep adding milk until the texture is right. Season with salt and pepper.

Dump the kale on top of the potatoes and give a quick stir. Transfer to a serving bowl, make a well in the center of the potatoes and pour the remaining olive oil. Sprinkle with the scallions, Parmesan cheese, and shallots. Yummy!

Collaboration between actors Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields. You might be thinking "oh no, not another Hollywood gone musician", but actually, this is pretty damn amazing!

They had a show here on October 24th at the Venue that I regrettably missed...

Homemade Gifts for the Holidays that don't suck!

Mulled Spice and a bottle of red wine

Here's what you need:

christmas mulled wine recipe spicesMulled wine spices:
  • 3-4" cinnamon stick (7-10cm)
  • 30 cloves
  • 20 allspice berries
  • 3 cardamom pods
  • 1tsp orange peel or mixed peel (from baking section of supermarket)

Extra materials to make spice sachet:

  • 6" (15cm) square of cheese-cloth, muslin or other plain cotton fabric. Backup option: improvise with a coffee filter or a teabag (empty out the tea).
  • Cotton thread to bind the sachet shut
  • Colourful ribbon (just for looks - don't cook it!)
Making up the sachet is easy - just wrap all the spices up in the cloth, seal by tying with cotton thread, and tie a ribbon around to pretty it up :-) You'll need to break the cinnamon stick into pieces to make it fit. By the way, make sure you tell the recipient to remove the ribbon before cooking!

Method of preparation

Add spices, 3 Tbsp of sugar, and 750mL (one bottle) of red wine to a saucepan. If using a sachet, remove ribbon first! Sometimes I slice an orange into the saucepan too. Bring to the boil and simmer for 15min. Ladle into mugs and serve hot. Garnish with a slice of orange for a nice touch. If you like, you can also add a wee bit of brandy to give it a bit of kick.
What sort of red wine to use? Pick something inexpensive but drinkable. Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfadel, Merlot, or a Spanish red all work well. There's no point using a really expensive red wine, because the taste will be so altered by the spices. But don't use a really cheap and rough red either.

The Dinner Pot

If you’re known for something like a sauce, then prepare jars of it and pair them with the necessary dry ingredients and recipe cards. If you only have to give one or two of these, you can also buy cheap pasta pots at a local discount store. Arrange everything in the pots, then wrap them up with a nice bow.

Personalized Recipe Book

If he or she is a vegetarian or has a penchant for curry, loves anything with tomatoes in or is a sucker for chocolate, make use of the fact by making a personalized recipe book. Start collecting appropriate recipes from books or magazines and purchase a small, inexpensive book to write them in. Copy them out in your neatest handwriting or use calligraphy if you are talented. If you have artistic flair, you can also include illustrations! What a delight this would be to the avid cook or food lover.

Teacup Candles

Antique teacups that have lost their saucers still make sweet gifts when fitted with candles.

Ten Thousand Villages
If you do wish to shop for a gift, perhaps an alternative to department stores is Ten Thousand Villages which provides vital, fair income to Third World artisans by marketing their handicrafts and telling their stories in North America. This alternative emphasizes the fair distribution of wealth while still in a consumerism context.

At Ten Thousand Villages, we work with over 130 artisan groups in more than 38 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring you fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more. As one of the world's oldest and largest fair trade organizations, we build long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life.

Cookies in a jar
Not the cookies themselves, but all the dry ingredients. Layer them in a Mason jar for an attractive presentation. Decorate the jar with fabric and ribbon, attaching the recipe with a bit of string (bonus points if you reuse the front half of old Christmas cards for this). These make great teacher gifts, or can be combined with other items in a gift basket. You’ll find plenty of variations at All Recipes.
